In response to Video-Cellar, I posted some thoughts that I wanted to express to our regular uploaders, but it got lost because it was a follow-up to an older message. So here's what I wanted to say:

Indeed, beggars can't be choosers, so I am very sorry if I ever came off as ungrateful for the many fun old movies and shows you've shared.

My comments were not directed at you or any other of the regular forum contributors. My problem is with the way one user was approaching the issue. I have no problem with polite requests, constructive criticism, etc. Its the manner in which people approach this. I have a problem with people who come to the forum and rudely and disrespectfully make all sorts of demands, especially when they can't demonstrate any reason why anyone should listen to them. Every now and then a troll comes along and you start to realise why some of the best IA contributors aren't here anymore.

I agree completely. Some websites I belong to kick trolls and howlers out. Of those sites that require a buy-in, I've seen none of their kind. I just don't take the bait when it happens here, and that seems to minimize the trash talk.

I recall k-otic being driven away at one time for this very reason. A few people had started grumbling about some of his contributions. I don't remember what their issue was, but we're lucky he eventually returned.

Then, if I understand you guys correctly, anyone NEW here or not included in your little "clique" or not a "regular forum contributor" must automatically be a troll? Anyone not content with watching blurry, jerky, poorly made videos must automatically be a troll? Anyone that doesn't start their comments off with "Sir Shane" or "Wow, you are a god!" or beg you "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE OH GREAT AND WISE ONE COULD YOU UPLOAD A BETTER QUALITY VIDEO", must automatically be a troll? Anyone trying to make The Internet Archive a place that the founders (and members) of this site could actually be PROUD of must be a troll?

I can live with that.

I'll grant that I may not be very tactful or diplomatic but I refuse to brown-nose anyone simply because they've uploaded a few movies. If people leave because they can't handle a little "non-sugar-coated" constructive criticism or don't feel they're being "respected" enough then so-be-it. "If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen".

If you want to share, then share. But do it right or don't do it at all. If the only reason you're here is for the adoration then get a dog.

Your Arrogance is overwhelming that makes you a troll in my book. If you frequent the same fast food places you can bet they are spittin in your food.

Nope but if what you want isnt here Look Elsewhere

****Anyone that doesn't start their comments off with "Sir Shane"****

Since this is directly a dig at me I forgive your ingnorance about respect for other posters.

How Dare you speak for me! Why would anyone need your seal of approval? Upload what you can If someone else has a better copy later cool if not then at least we could see it.

****If the only reason you're here is for the adoration then get a dog.****

And you are not a troll, (righttttt)

Can you give examples of an upload of yours? You know so we might practise constructive criticism.

I find this really hard to believe. Just last week, fedupwithgarbage said he couldn't wait to get his nose all up in it.

What's here is donated and provided by people on their own time. If you have issues with the content, I suggest you go to a paid site such as Netflix where they might actually care about your whining.

I, for one, am glad that there are so many poeple out there who take the time to upload anything they have, be it 150MB or 4G. As far as the quality of anything I upload, I do what I know how to do. If someone has a better file of a movie I put up, by all means put it up, and I might just download it myself just to improve my collection. As for as people who want to carp about what's here, either in a review or here in the forum, don't let them bother you. Most of the time these are just guys who expect everything handed to them while they're sitting on their asses. I never see these guys post a message with the subject "please move". So you guys that upload movies and other stuff, KEEP DOING IT! I believe to true measure of interest you should care about in what you upload is on the details page, the part that says "downloaded x-many times". For every single person that might pitch a bitch about your upload, there's a few hundred others that have no problem, or better still, even like what you took the time to put up. That is what makes it worthwhile to contribute files to the archive. So if you got something you feel is interesting you want to share, make sure it's public domain and go for it. Don't let negative comments disturb you. From me, this goes to everyone that uploads to this site.

fedupwithgarbage... if you don't like the way things are here, feel free to go somewhere else. Nothing here is costing you a dime. How can you complain about not getting what YOU want. Sorry, the whole world isn't about you. We come here because we are satisfied with the FREE things that are shared. The good company, the friendships, etc. The IA is kind enough to supply the servers, bandwidth, volunteers, etc. There is a difference between constructive criticism and being insulting. If you are such an expert, why not give help with making better quality videos instead of putting down whats here, and those who put it here? That would get much better results.

I think wikipedia's definition of troll is fitting:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional or disciplinary response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."

The user name fedupwithgarbage is enough to belong to the above catagory.
